Sowerby Bridge High Street Heritage Action Zone

Attracting day time visitors to market town through refurbishing and repurposing historic buildings.

Sowerby Bridge is a small attractive market town in West Yorkshire, which developed in the 19th century around engineering and the textiles industry. Several mills and iron foundry sites survive today, as well as a number of attractive municipal buildings, which reflect its proud industrial heritage.

The town centre has a thriving nightlife but struggles to attract people in the daytime. This is down to a combination of heavy traffic and a lack of decent shops, with many lying empty and in a poor state of repair.

How the Sowerby Bridge High Street Heritage Action Zone will help

The High Street Heritage Action Zone will create more things to do in the day time by repairing and refurbishing historic buildings that can be used for a variety of activities and events. Increased and improved pedestrian areas will make the high street a nicer place for visitors and reduce the negative impact of the traffic.
